How do I get rid a really bad headache?

I occasionally get a headache that is so bad I can't focus on doing work. It doesn't affect my vision or anything but nothing I take will get rid of it. I've tried BC powder and extra doses of Ibuprofen but that does nothing. It's usually around my right temple. I work at a computer all day so I'm pretty sure that has something to do with it. When I try to take a nap after work, it makes the headache worse when I wake up. The only thing that gets rid of it is to get a full nights rest.

Last night I tried putting some ice on the spot and it became a very sharp almost unbearable pain. Any suggestions?

I would suggest massaging the head with a well lubricated hand in order for… er… tension to be released.

Ask some of your friends if they go to a good Chiropractor.

It has really helped me and some other people I know.

Another suggestion: Does your eye water? It sounds like it might be a cluster headache. Don't bother with a regular physician. Go to a Neurologist first. They will be able to diagnose it more quickly most times. A regular doc will just refer you to a Neuro, so if you can, go see one first.

This pain sounds like migrain, that's usually something that focus around temples and is often very hard to get rid of if not medicating correctly (and sometimes even if you do medicate correctly). However I strongly advice you to go see a med proffessional and examine this problem of yours. It's incredibly dumb and risky to just treat symptoms if you don't know the real reasons for them! (So no - do not just go visit a chiropractor or an acupuncture person or something.. This is your health we're talking about!)

EDIT: A general misconception is that people with migrain always suffers from (for example visual) auras, which they do not! Sometimes the pain itself is the only noticeable symptom.

There are alot of causes to headache. Yours seem to be migraine.

Some people get headache when they smell certain thing, or its too noisy. Therefore, it will be good if you can identify what is the precipitating factor and avoid it so as to prevent the headache.

However, if it gets too severe and unbearable you would need to go to doctor.

The doctor will usually give you painkiller. For example, diclofenac sodium(voltaren), tramadol, codeine and so on.

THey will also give use painkiller especially to take during the attack. It is by right stronger and more effective than those mentioned above. Such as ergotamine/caffeine (older drug) and drugs under the triptan class.

It is also possible that the doctor may give you drug to prevent your headache.

Hope this info can help!

Headaches can be caused by minor problems
like eyestrain, lack of coffee or more serious reasons
like head injury, brain tumors, encephalitis and
meningitis. Taking painkillers continuously can
have harmful side effects, so it is better to
modify your lifestyle. More information available at
